How to Care for Fresh Sod

Sod is a popular choice for homeowners who want an instant lawn. It is important to care for sod properly in order to ensure it takes root and establishes a healthy, lush lawn. Here are some tips for caring for sod:

Watering

Sod needs to be watered regularly to establish its root system. Water it immediately after installation, and then water it every day for the first two weeks, keeping the soil moist but not soaked. After that, reduce watering to every other day for the next two weeks, and then gradually decrease the frequency to once or twice a week as the sod becomes established.

1. Mowing:

Wait until the sod has taken root before mowing it, which usually takes two to three weeks. When you do mow it, make sure the blade is sharp and set it to a height of two to three inches. Avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.

2. Fertilizing:

Sod needs nutrients to grow, so it is important to fertilize it regularly. Apply a slow-release fertilizer six to eight weeks after installation, and then every six to eight weeks thereafter.

3. Weed control:

Keep an eye out for weeds and remove them promptly. Use a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent weeds from sprouting, and a post-emergent herbicide to control existing weeds.

4. Aeration:

Sod needs to be aerated once a year to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the soil. Aeration also helps to loosen compacted soil, which can improve drainage and reduce the risk of disease.

5. Pest control:

Sod is susceptible to pests such as grubs, chinch bugs, and armyworms. Use a pesticide if you notice any signs of pest damage.

By following these tips, you can ensure your sod takes root and grows into a beautiful, healthy lawn. With proper care, your sod can provide years of enjoyment for you and your family.
